Jo Angelia Waters was born in Salzburg, Austria in 1958 and God placed her into the hands and hearts of a young military couple, Joseph and Thelma Waters. She graduated from St. Gerard's Regional High School on the Eastside of San Antonio, TX. (1976) She received both her Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health (1980); and the Master of Arts in Teaching Sociology (1996) from Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. Ms. Waters is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Ms. Waters retired in 2010, after 15 years of coaching in public schools and 15 years as a full-time tenured instructor of Sociology at St. Philip’s Community College (San Antonio, TX). January 2013 to August 2016, she extended her teaching career as an online adjunct instructor for Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, and has returned as an adjunct for St. Philip's College.
After the passing of her husband, The Rev. Dr. E. Thurman Walker, Jr. in October 2009, and her mother, Mrs. Thelma Raye Bass in December 2010, Jo was inspired to write a book titled The Person Beside the Bed: Encouragement for Informal Caregivers (Creative Enterprises, 2013). Ms. Waters has served as a speaker and presenter for numerous churches, community gatherings, medical and academic settings throughout Texas, Michigan, Florida, Colorado, and Ohio specifically not the topics of caring for caregivers, and issues of death and dying. Ms. Waters is a participating member of Heal the Healer, Inc., an organization that encourages, ministers to, and informs the community in issues concerning informal and formal caregiving.
Ms. Waters was called to the preaching ministry on May 24, 2015 and licensed in December 2015, under Pastors Freddie and Marsha Piphus of Zion Global Ministries in West Chester, Ohio. She is furthering her preparation as a preacher of the Gospel as a student at The Interdenominational Theological Center at Morehouse College, studying for the Masters of Divinity with a concentration in Homiletics. Jo Angelia currently worships and serves at Resurrection Baptist Church under Pastor Ray Brown.
In September 2015 Ms. Waters re-vitalized the Walker Institute of Learning and Leadership for Boys of Excellence (WILLBE) Academy of Music Technology partnering with the George Gervin Academy. The mission of WILL BE AMT is to provide instruction and a state-of-the-art music technology program for the George Gervin Academy middle school students. Classes began in August 2016 and future plans include an after school component, establishment of The Dr. E. Thurman Walker, Jr. Boys Choir, and the WILLBE Project designed to mentor young men. .
For over 35 years, Jo Angelia has been a speaker, teacher, and now preacher in the San Antonio and surrounding community. She has presented at women's conferences, conventions, and church services. Her passion for educating , encouraging, and uplifting others is well known. She has been blessed and gifted to inspire others to live life at a higher level through a closer relationship with Jesus Christ.
Family and close friends are a vital part of her life. Ms. Waters is a proud mother and doting grandmother (Gaga) of 5. She is also a loving godmother, daughter, sister, niece, cousin, and caring friend. Her life scripture is Philippians 4: 6-7.
